Nearly every community in Thailand organises online first — but the ones worth having then meet in person. Treat the apps as the front door, never the house.

The essential toolkit

• Facebook groups remain the backbone of Thai expat life — city groups, buy/sell/swap, interest and nationality groups, event listings. Join your city's main ones on day one;
• Meetup and event platforms run the big cities' real-world social calendars — the single best tool for scheduled, newcomer-friendly gatherings (expat scene);
• LINE is Thailand's default messenger — social life, groups and even businesses run on it. You'll need it; group-chats are where plans actually happen;
• Interest & language apps: language-exchange apps (the master key), sport and hobby apps, and the nomad platforms for remote workers;
• Forums & subreddits for city-specific Q&A and the occasional meetup.

The one rule

• Always convert online to offline. The connection only becomes friendship in person — use the apps to find the coffee, the run, the game, the dinner, then go;
• Be a contributor, not a lurker: answer newcomers' questions, and you'll be the recognised name when you show up in the room;
• Ordinary online caution applies — meet new people first in public places, tell someone your plans.
